For me, Mt. Fuji isn't just a mountain โ it's part of my identity, my spirituality, and my daily life.
My goal is simple: show you the Mt. Fuji that locals know and love, not just what's in guidebooks and viral reels.
Most visitors see Japan's customs without knowing the why. Your guide explains the invisible forces shaping daily life โ things you can't find in a guidebook.
Only around 3% of Japanese people identify as religious โ yet nearly everyone visits shrines on New Year's, attends Buddhist funerals, and prays at temples for good luck. How?
Shinto and Buddhism in Japan are not competing belief systems โ they've coexisted and blended for over 1,400 years. Shinto, rooted in the idea that gods (kami) dwell in nature โ mountains, rivers, trees โ is less a set of doctrines than a way of relating to the world. Buddhism, which arrived from China in the 6th century, added a framework for life's rituals: birth, death, the afterlife.
The result is a culture where spiritual practice is habitual and communal, not confessional. You don't need to "believe" to participate โ just as people around the world celebrate Christmas without being devout. For most Japanese, visiting Mt. Fuji's shrine isn't an act of faith; it's an act of being Japanese.
Japan removed most public trash cans in the 1990s following security concerns โ yet streets stayed immaculate. Visitors are often baffled. The answer isn't enforcement. It's three overlapping worldviews that have shaped Japanese behavior for centuries.
Shinto: ๆธ ๆต (purity) โ In Shinto thought, spaces โ especially sacred ones โ must be kept clean and pure. This isn't just about hygiene; it's spiritual. A cluttered, dirty space is one where kami cannot dwell. The habit of cleanliness extends from the shrine to the street.
Zen Buddhism: cleaning as practice (ไฟฎ่ก) โ In Zen temples, sweeping and scrubbing are not chores โ they are meditation. The act of cleaning trains the mind and builds character. Japanese schools still begin the day with students cleaning their own classrooms, a direct descendant of this tradition.
Confucian ๅ (harmony): don't cause trouble โ Deeply embedded in Japanese social ethics is the idea that one should not impose burden or inconvenience on others. Leaving litter is not just untidy โ it's a moral failure, a disruption of collective harmony. So people carry their trash home.
No single force explains it. It's the intersection of all three โ and once you see it, you see it everywhere in Japan.
Some spots are cash-only โ lockers, kimono rental, shrine offerings, and certain cafรฉs. Most restaurants and shops also accept cards.
Only Kodama trains stop at Shin-Fuji Station โ not Nozomi or Hikari. Covered by JR Pass and usually less crowded.
Sit in seat E from Tokyo (right-side window), or seat A from Kyoto/Osaka (left-side window) for the best Mt. Fuji views from the bullet train.
